Prosody & […] is an exploration in translation of French symbolist Stéphane Mallarmé’s 1897 poem Un coup de dés jamais n’abolira le hasard (A throw of the dice will never abolish chance). Innovative in both form and content, Un coup de dés encourages the reader to engage with the text in an active, intuitive, and nonlinear way. I hope to achieve something similar with my interdisciplinary approach to translating the poem.
Working from an English translation of Un coup de dés by E.H. & A.M. Blackmore, I have completed a series of my own translations in a number of forms, including typography, movement, movement notation (Labanotation), nonlinear mathematics, and time-based digital animation. The series is presented in a coalescence of traditional book form and electronic media.
